Jamel Cato

I'm a man interested in ideas, a Philadelphia native, an analytics professional and a Georgia Tech alumnus. I live in New Jersey with my wife and children.

I write stories about people with extraordinary abilities experiencing the most remarkable events of their lives.

When I'm not writing fiction, I'm often writing about data at my other site Catolytics.

7 Revealing Personal Questions

How would you describe your personality?

I'm reserved and low-key.

Then how would you endure Hollywood parties if something you wrote was adapted into a movie?

I’d sip Orangina and tell this old industry anecdote:

Two goats are on the back of a Hollywood lot chewing film stock. One goat says, “This film is good.” Then the other one says, “But the movie was better.” They laugh.
Hopefully the people who get that will be the ones working on my adaptation.

What draws you to Fantasy and Science Fiction?

Either can finish the sentence “Imagine if…” in ways no other genre can. The imagination was not meant to be caged.

Has anyone ever told you that you look like John Legend?

Who Are Some of Your Favorite Writers?

Walter Mosley, Ted Chiang, Toni Morrison and Brandon Sanderson among others.

What’s your favorite quote?

Kirk Douglas once told Esquire Magazine:

"Maybe when you die, you come before a big, bearded man on a big throne, and you say, "Is this heaven?" And he says, "Heaven? You just came from there."

What’s Your Favorite Movie?

Black Panther. For me, this film is the cinematic embodiment of the kind of stories I love to read and humbly strive to write: Astonishing fictive elements counterbalanced with thought-provoking insights into human nature.
